There are nearly 3,500 Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering businesses here in Leicester and Leicestershire. But what is Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering ?
-
Engineering is the use of scientific and practical knowledge to invent, design and construct everything around us.
-
Manufacturing is the production of goods from raw materials into finished products, and is often very high tech.
Across Leicestershire engineering and manufacturing are in the top five areas for apprenticeship starts. Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering can take a variety of forms – civil, military, or mechanical but the term ‘engineering industry’ is normally used in a more limited sense to describe the industry devoted to the manufacture of engines, machine-tools, and machinery. Design engineering can be an exciting and rewarding career as at the end of the process you will have a finished product. Engineers may use CAD and 3D printers to design.
There are some great opportunities in the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sector. There is an ageing workforce and young people are needed to become the engineers and manufacturers of tomorrow. Also, only 25% of the local workforce is female, presenting another opportunity.
