Low Carbon

This is a very varied area to work in and roles can include Countryside Ranger Apprentice, Solar Panel Installer and Recycling Officer.

Low carbon means supplying energy to businesses and consumers using renewable sources such as wind and solar technology or electric vehicles instead of fuel powered.
All businesses will need to be low carbon and need their employees to help reduce their carbon footprint. The low carbon sector locally employs 3,500 people in energy alone.
Job opportunities include installing measures e.g. external wall insulation, air source heat pumps and solar panels.
Creative and innovation skills are important as businesses try to find greener solutions, for example by:
  • Lowering the carbon footprint of products
  • Looking to use recycled materials where possible
  • Trying to replace plastics with plant-based alternatives
